Assistant Professor of Medicine, Public Health Sciences, and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Ph.D., Computational Biology, University of Pittsburgh/Carnegie Mellon University (2013)
Fellowship, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Penn State Hershey Medical Center (2012)
Residency, Internal Medicine, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (2006)
M.D., University of Michigan Medical School (2003)

Dr. Howrylak’s research is focused on using integrative genomics approaches to refine the diagnosis and prognosis of inflammatory lung diseases, with a focus on Acute Lung Injury (ALI)/Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). Current projects involve combining gene expression analysis and genetic associations to identify genes and regulatory regions that contribute to the susceptibility and severity of ARDS.

Dr. Howrylak is the primary investigator (PI) for the Penn State Hershey Medical Center Registry of Critical Illness (PSHMC RoCI), a research registry and bio-repository for the study of genetic and genomic risk factors for critical illness. She oversees the collection of biologic specimens from critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and the development of a clinical database of detailed phenotypes from several hundred critically ill patients.
