Dr. Hegarty's research focuses on the molecular biology of gastrointestinal infections, as well as genetic and epigenetic aspects of inflammatory bowel diseases. In collaboration with David B. Stewart M.D., their team is developing microbiome-sparing approaches for treatment of C. difficile infection in humans. Current projects include nanotechnology-based antisense delivery systems and biomimetic liposomes as alternative antimicrobial treatments, and also characterization of the contribution of genetic variants to the risk of gastrointestinal diseases and patient response to treatments. Areas of expertise include prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell biology, molecular genetics, antisense antibiotics, bioinformatic and pathway analyses.
