EDUCATION:
Post-Doctoral Fellow. Erasmus University MC - Dept. Gastroenterology & Hepatology (2003)
Ph.D. Molecular Microbiology, University of Central Lancashire (2002)
M.S. Environmental Microbiology, The Pennsylvania State Univeristy (1999)

NARRATIVE:
Dr. Hegarty's focuses on the molecular microbiology of gastrointestinal infections, as well as genetic and epigenetic aspects of inflammatory bowel disease. Current work with David B. Stewart M.D. involves the development of alternative microbiome-sparing approaches for treatment of C. difficile infection in humans, and the characterization of genetic variants contributing to the risk of gastrointestinal diseases and patient response to treatments with Walter A. Koltun, M.D. Areas of expertise include prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell biology, molecular genetics, gene regulation, next-generation sequencing, bioinformatic and pathway analyses.
