Dr. Hegarty's research focuses on molecular microbiology of bacterial and viral gastrointestinal infections, as well as genetic and epigenetic aspects of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The identification and characterization of genetic variants contributing to the risk of gastrointestinal diseases and patient response to treatment is the focus of the laboratory of Walter Koltun M.D. Innovative approaches are being investigated with David Stewart M.D. for the treatment of C. difficile infection. Areas of expertise include prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell biology, molecular genetics, gene regulation, next-generation sequencing, bioinformatic and pathway analyses.
