NARRATIVE:

Dr. Weisman is a sociologist and health services researcher with a principal interest in women’s health care and policy. Her research focuses on improving access to primary and preventive care, organizational models for primary care delivery, and quality of health care for women. Her major current project, the Central Pennsylvania Women’s Health Study (CePAWHS), focuses on understanding the determinants of the health of reproductive-age women, particularly in low-income rural and urban communities, and the relationship between preconceptional health and pregnancy outcomes for the mother and baby. She is also co-directing a project assessing barriers to primary care for rural women. She is Principal Investigator of the NIH-funded Penn State BIRCWH (Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health) K-12 program, which provides mentored research career development for junior faculty members. She has worked with the Veterans Administration on studies of primary care delivery models for women veterans. Dr. Weisman served on the IOM Committee on Preventive Services for Women (2010-2011); is Associate Editor of Women's Health Issues, the peer-reviewed journal of the Jacobs Institute of Women's Health; and was the 2007 Chair of the Board of Directors of AcademyHealth.
