    My lab studies the intestinal immune system in health and disease with the focus on the mononuclear phagocyte family. Mononuclear phagocytes include dendritic cells (DCs) and macrophages, two related but subspecialized cell types with common and distinct functions. The common functions include the ability to phagocytize extracellular matrix and microbes; however, it is still elusive how the labor is divided between DCs and macrophages.
    Understanding the functional specialization of intestinal mononuclear phagocyte subsets requires reconstruction of their cellular microenvironment. Following this approach, we recently characterized a distinct subset of intestinal macrophages that reside along the neural fibers and next to neurons of the enteric nervous system (ENS). We have demonstrated that the crosstalk between ENS-associated macrophages and enteric neurons modulates gastrointestinal physiology in response to mucosal stimuli.
    Gastrointestinal (GI) health is essential for overall body health. Differentiation between harmless and harmful antigens is essential in the optimal immune response and maintenance of GI integrity. Neural mechanisms regulate all key functions of the GI tract such as motility, secretion and vasoregulation. Moreover, accumulating evidence indicates an integrated regulatory role of neural signals in intestinal immunity. The overall interest of my lab is to understand how coordinated efforts of enteric immune and nervous systems maintain intestinal homeostasis and control infection, and how the disbalance in each system may lead to developing inflammatory gut conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
