    PREFERRED TITLE/ROLE:

    Physician, Professor of Medicine

    EDUCATION:

Fellowship, Pulmonary/Critical Care, Johns Hopkins University Hospital (1985) Residency, Internal Medicine, Johns Hopkins University Hospital (1982) Internship, Internal Medicine, Johns Hopkins University Hospital (1980) M.D., University of Oregon Health Science Center (1979)

    NARRATIVE:

Dr. Bascom engages in interdisciplinary research with a wide range of collaborators. Her primary areas of focus are:

    1) Clinical research in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, as a co-founder of the Pennsylvania IPF Registry and member of the PCORI-funded PaTH Clinical Data Research Network's rare disease/IPF group. She leads the Penn State Hershey Medical Center Pulmonary Fibrosis (PFF) Care Center and the bi-weekly Multidisciplinary Diffuse Parenchymal Lung Disease conference. Consented patients contribute to bio-repositories nationally (PFF) and locally (IPM). IPF research focuses on patient-reported outcomes and interventions to improve functional status. Researchers in her group are developing a cough challenge model. She is a site investigator for multiple pharmaceutical trials for IPF therapies.

    2) Inhalation toxicology, with a focus on markers and mechanisms of upper respiratory injury. She and Dr. Ali Borhan (Chemical Engineering, University Park) are collaborating to establish dosimetric models of toxicant induced lung injury using chest CT scans from consented patients with healthy and diseased lungs. She is currently on the internal scientific advisory committee for the Penn State Tobacco Center of Regulatory Science (TCORS) and data safety monitor for their clinical trials of modified risk tobacco products.

    3) Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes/Heritable Disorders of Connective Tissue (EDS/HDCT). She is collaborating with Dr.Clair Francomano (head, Ehlers-Danlos National Center for Clinical Care and Research) to analyze a rich phenotypic dataset of EDS patients. She and Dr. Jane Schubart (Department of Surgery) have a CTSI Bridges to Translation award to establish a research program at Penn State focused on heritable disorders of connective tissue. The focus will be on nighttime sleep and daytime fatigue and sleepiness (in collaboration with Dr. Fernandez-Mendoza), dysautonomia (with Dr. Amanda Ross Miller) and pain.

    4) Development of multimodal guidance systems for diagnostic bronchoscopy, as clinical partner with the NIH-funded Multidimensional Image Processing Laboratory (MIPL) at Penn State, led by William Higgins, PhD, Professor of Electrical Engineering.

    5) Pulmonary Trials Cooperative Network Management Core (NEMO, Environmental and Occupational consultation) site investigator for 2 PTC clinical trials: INSIGHT (exercise interventions for COPD); CLEAN UP IPF (antibiotics to prevent IPF exacerbation),

Previously, she led the analysis team to evaluate the cardiorespiratory health effects of the 9/11 terrorist attack on New York City police officers in collaboration with the Living Heart Foundation (LHF), and directed the University of Maryland’s Environmental Research Facility, which was a controlled human exposure facility focusing on exposure to environmental pollutants such as sidestream tobacco smoke, ozone, and other pollutants.

Dr. Bascom has served on several Institute of Medicine committees, including the Indoor Allergens: Assessing and Controlling Adverse Health Effects, Occupational Health and Safety in the Care and Use of Research Animals, Emergency and Continuous Exposure Guidance Levels for Selected Submarine Contaminants, Scientific Standards for Modified Risk Tobacco Products, and most recently, Standards for Controlled Human Exposure Studies.
