NARRATIVE:

My research group studies the structural, biochemical, and physiological properties of molecular motor and cytoskeletal proteins. We examine the structural mechanism of energy transduction in myosin motor proteins using spectroscopic, enzymatic, and biophysical methods. In addition, studies of uncharacterized non-muscle myosin proteins that function in vision, hearing, intracellular transport, and contractility are in progress. Defects in the myosin motors under investigation are associated with many different genetic diseases such as cardiomyopathies, cancer, deafness, and retinal degeneration. Other ongoing projects are focused on myosin-based regulation of the actin cytoskeleton in alveolar macrophages, inner ear hair cells, and photoreceptors.
