NARRATIVE:

In addition to being a professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences, Dr. Lloyd holds joint appointments in the departments of Pharmacology, Obstetrics and Gynecology and Nutrition and Kinesiology. Dr. Lloyd’s current research interests are in three areas. Bone. The long term goal of this program is to quantify the roles of modifiable lifestyle determinants, especially exercise and calcium intake, on the development and maintenance of bone strength, particularly of the female hip. ICU. The purpose of this multidisciplinary project is to improve outcomes for families of ICU patients. Health Education. The goal of this program is to demonstrate that multimedia strategies can be successfully applied to health education across the lifespan. Dr. Lloyd has had continuous external research support since 1976, including being an American Heart Established Investigator.

Training medical students and physicians to conduct research has shaped much of Dr. Lloyd’s career. He chaired the Penn State Medical Student Research Committee for 28 years during which time the he provided the leadership that lead to establishment of the annual Medical Student Research Symposium (1981); establishment of a College of Medicine Computer Learning Center (1986), assessment of the impact of medical student research on postgraduate career activities (1988 and 2001); production of the CD program to introduce medical students to the key elements of clinical research (1997 and 2003); Dr. Lloyd has been the research project mentor for 30 medical students, physician students and graduate students. More recently Dr. Lloyd was the PI for the Penn State Clinical Research Training Program (K30) Program, 1999 – 2010. As part of the Master’s Program in Public Health Science Dr. Lloyd created and taught Penn State Graduate courses in Clinical Research Methods, Scientific Communications and Patient Oriented Research.
