EDUCATION:

M.Sc., Pharmaceutical Science, Medical Academy of Warsaw, 1971
Ph.D., Medicinal Chemistry, Medical Academy of Warsaw, 1976

NARRATIVE:

Research in my laboratory focuses primarily on understanding the mechanism of action of tobacco-derived carcinogens, specifically N-nitrosamines (TSNA) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), on the induction of pancreatic, cervical, and lung cancers. Studies conducted in my laboratory include: (I) identification of active carcinogens and their metabolites in various biological fluids, macromolecular binding of these compounds, and assessment of their carcinogenic activity in animal assays, (ii) development and validation of biomarkers applicable for molecular epidemiologic and chemoprevention studies for early detection of these cancers, (iii) development of novel mechanism-based strategies for the prevention of these malignancies (iv) and elucidating why smokers’ susceptibility to these diseases may vary.
